Biography
Sergei Prokofiev was a Russian and Soviet composer, pianist and conductor. He was born on 23 April 1891 in Sontsovka, Bakhmut Uyezd, Yekaterinoslav Governorate, Russian Empire (now in Ukraine), and died on 5 March 1953 in Moscow.
Prokofiev studied at the St Petersburg Conservatory. He lived abroad from 1918 until returning to the Soviet Union in the 1930s. His film scores include music for Alexander Nevsky (1938), Ivan the Terrible, Part I (1944) and Lieutenant Kizhe (1934). Excerpts from his ballet Romeo and Juliet appear in The Turning Point (1977). He is also known for the symphonic tale Peter and the Wolf (1936) and the ballets Romeo and Juliet (1938 premiere) and Cinderella (1945 premiere).
