Biography
Shemp Howard was an American actor and comedian, also credited as Samuel Horwitz. He played Joe Guelpe in the 1940 film The Bank Dick.
He is best known for his work as one of the Three Stooges, appearing with the act from 1923 to 1932 and again from 1946 until his death. In between these periods he pursued a solo career in feature films and shorts, with roles including Wacky in Another Thin Man (1939), Louie in Hellzapoppin' (1941), Frankie in The Invisible Woman (1940), a soda jerk in Hold That Ghost (1941), a chef in Buck Privates (1941) and Gunner in Africa Screams (1949).
Howard was born Samuel Horwitz on 11 March 1895 and died on 22 November 1955. He was the brother of fellow Stooges Moe Howard and Curly Howard.
