Biography
Shigeru Umebayashi is a Japanese composer. Born in Kitakyushu on 19 February 1951, he was the leader and bass player of the new wave rock band EX before beginning to score films in 1985 after the band's dissolution.
He is best known for his work with Wong Kar-wai, including the score for In the Mood for Love (2000), which featured 'Yumeji's Theme' originally composed for Seijun Suzuki's Yumeji (1991), and contributions to 2046 (2004) and The Grandmaster (2013). Umebayashi has also composed for Zhang Yimou's House of Flying Daggers (2004) and Curse of the Golden Flower (2006), as well as Fearless (2006) and Hannibal Rising (2007).
In 2023 he received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Rome Film Festival.
