Biography
Shirley Douglas was a Canadian actress. She was born Shirley Jean Douglas on 2 April 1934 in Weyburn, Saskatchewan, and died on 5 April 2020 in Toronto, Ontario.
Douglas trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London and began her career in British theatre and television before returning to Canada. Her film roles included Mrs. Starch in Lolita (1962) and Laura in Dead Ringers (1988). On television she played May Bailey in the series Wind at My Back (1996–2001) and appeared in Degrassi: The Next Generation and other productions. She was the daughter of politician Tommy Douglas and the mother of actor Kiefer Sutherland.
Douglas was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2003 for her contributions to the performing arts. She received a Gemini Award for her performance in the television film Shadow Lake (1999).
