Biography
Shoji Ueda, also credited as Masaharu Ueda or Shōji Ueda, was a Japanese cinematographer. He was born on 1 January 1938 in Funabashi, Chiba, Japan, and died on 16 January 2025 in Yokohama, Kanagawa, Japan.
He worked frequently with director Akira Kurosawa. His credits include Kagemusha (1980), Ran (1985), Dreams (1990), Rhapsody in August (1991) and Madadayo (1993). For Ran, he shared cinematography duties with Takao Saito and Asakazu Nakai and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Cinematography.
Ueda also served as director of photography on several films directed by Takashi Koizumi, including After the Rain (1999), Letters from the Mountains (2002) and Best Wishes for Tomorrow (2007).
