Biography

Sid Roberson (1937–2016) was a British television and commercials director. Born Sidney Percy Roberson in Edmonton, London, he began his working life as a bodybuilder, placing third in the 1963 Mr Universe contest and later serving as a personal trainer to Reggie Kray. He entered the film industry through connections made by his first wife and went on to direct numerous television commercials, including the celebrated Hamlet cigar campaign.

Roberson directed episodes of several British television series, including The Sweeney (1978), Robin of Sherwood (1986) and The Fast Show (1996). He also directed political broadcasts for the Labour Party and public information films. He was nominated for a BAFTA Award and later pursued a second career as a stills photographer before studying politics at Birkbeck, University of London in later life.
