Biography
Sidney Gilliat (15 February 1908 – 31 May 1994) was an English screenwriter, director and producer. He began his career writing intertitles for silent films and progressed to screenplays in the early 1930s.
In the 1930s he formed a long-lasting partnership with Frank Launder. Their credits include the screenplay for Alfred Hitchcock’s The Lady Vanishes (1938) and Night Train to Munich (1940). They co-directed their first feature, Millions Like Us (1943), and later founded Individual Pictures. Gilliat also directed Green for Danger (1946) and Endless Night (1972), while Launder handled many of their comedies, including the St Trinian’s series.
Gilliat wrote the libretto for the opera Our Man in Havana (1963) by Malcolm Williamson.
