Biography
Stephen Butchard is a British screenwriter and television producer from Liverpool. He trained as an engineer and worked for a year in Beijing on the underground rail network before turning to writing. In 1997 he won the Dennis Potter Award for his play Soft Sand, Blue Sea.
Butchard is known for creating and writing the historical drama series The Last Kingdom (2015–2022). His other credits include the mini-series House of Saddam (2008), Vincent (2005–2006), Five Daughters (2010), Good Cop (2012), Baghdad Central (2020), The Good Mothers (2023) and Shardlake (2024). He created, wrote and executive-produced the crime drama This City Is Ours (2025) for BBC One.
