Biography

Stephen Campbell was an American cinematographer and camera operator. Born in West Orange, New Jersey, he graduated from Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida. He began his career in the 1980s, working as a camera assistant on Michael Jackson’s Thriller World Tour in 1984 and the Bad Tour in 1986–1987, before moving into film and television production.

Campbell contributed to numerous features and series, often as a camera operator on titles including Monster (2003), The Punisher (2004) and Zombieland (2009). He joined The Walking Dead in 2013 as a camera operator and served as director of photography on 36 episodes between 2014 and 2020, alternating duties with Michael E. Satrazemis. He also worked on Lore (2017) and Halt and Catch Fire (2014). Campbell received an Operator of the Year Award nomination from the Society of Operating Cameramen. He died in Winter Park, Florida, on 4 November 2021; an episode of The Walking Dead was dedicated to him.
