Biography
Stephen McHattie is a Canadian actor. Born Stephen McHattie Smith on 3 February 1947 in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, he began acting in local amateur productions at age 16 and moved to New York at 19 to train at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.
He started his professional career on stage, appearing in the 1968 Broadway production of The American Dream and winning an Obie Award for Mensch Meier. McHattie has over 200 film, television and theatre credits. His film roles include Leland in David Cronenberg's A History of Violence (2005), Loyalist in 300 (2007), Hollis Mason in Watchmen (2009) and appearances in The Fountain (2006) and Nightmare Alley (2021). He won a Genie Award for Best Supporting Actor as Dick Irvin in The Rocket (2005) and a Gemini Award for Life with Billy (1994).
