Biography
Steve Murphy (born Stephen M. Clancey; 25 December 1876 – 31 January 1953) was an American character actor of the silent-film era, also credited as Broken Nose Murphy. He was born in Providence, Rhode Island, and died in California.
Murphy began working in California studios around 1915 as a property man before moving into acting. He appeared in numerous uncredited or minor roles, often as henchmen, conmen or tough characters, in films including Sherlock Jr. (1924), The Gold Rush (1925), The Circus (1928), Cops (1922) and The Battle of the Century (1927). He is noted as the only actor of the period to work with Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd and Laurel and Hardy.
