Biography
Steven Canals (born 14 September 1980) is an American screenwriter, producer and director. He grew up in the Bronx, New York, in housing projects in the Castle Hill neighbourhood, and is of African American and Puerto Rican heritage. He earned a BA in cinema and an MA in student affairs from Binghamton University, followed by an MFA in screenwriting from UCLA in 2015.
Canals is best known as co-creator, writer and director of the FX series Pose (2018–2021), which he developed while at UCLA. He previously served as a staff writer on the Freeform series Dead of Summer (2016) and has directed episodes of series including Love, Victor (2022) and Class of '09 (2023). He signed an overall deal with 20th Century Fox Television in 2020.
