Biography
Stuart Whitman was an American actor. Born Stuart Maxwell Whitman in San Francisco on 1 February 1928, he died in Montecito, California, on 16 March 2020. After service in the US Army Corps of Engineers, he studied acting at Los Angeles City College and the Los Angeles Academy of Dramatic Art. He began his screen career with small roles in the early 1950s, including The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) and Silver Lode (1954).
Whitman received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for his leading role in The Mark (1961). He appeared in The Comancheros (1961) alongside John Wayne, The Longest Day (1962) and Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines (1965). On television he starred as Marshal Jim Crown in the Western series Cimarron Strip (1967) and had guest roles in series including Knight Rider (1982), The A-Team (1983) and Walker, Texas Ranger (1993).
