Biography
Sturla Gunnarsson is an Icelandic-Canadian film and television director and producer. Born in Reykjavík in 1951, he moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, with his family at the age of seven. He studied English literature and film at the University of British Columbia before moving to Toronto, where he began working for the National Film Board of Canada.
His early documentary After the Axe (1982) received an Academy Award nomination. Gunnarsson has directed feature films including Such a Long Journey (1998), Beowulf & Grendel (2005) and Monsoon (2014). His television credits include episodes of Schitt's Creek (2015), for which he received a Canadian Screen Awards nomination for best director, as well as Motive, Ransom and 19-2.
In 2022 he was awarded the Directors Guild of Canada's Lifetime Achievement Award.
