Biography
Taiji Tonoyama (殿山 泰司) was a Japanese character actor. He appeared in films and on television from 1939 until his death, with credits including roles in Drunken Angel (1948), Good Morning (1959), The Naked Island (1960), Onibaba (1964), Kuroneko (1968), In the Realm of the Senses (1976), Vengeance Is Mine (1979) and The Ballad of Narayama (1983) as Teruyan.
He was a close friend and regular collaborator of director Kaneto Shindo. In 1950 Tonoyama helped establish the independent production company Kindai Eiga Kyōkai with Shindo and Kōzaburō Yoshimura. He was also an essayist.
