Biography
Ted Lewis was a British writer of crime fiction. Born Alfred Edward Lewis on 15 January 1940 in Stretford, Manchester, he moved with his family to Barton-upon-Humber in Lincolnshire as a child. He attended Hull College of Art and worked in advertising and animation, including on the 1968 film Yellow Submarine, before turning to novels.
His second novel, Jack's Return Home (1970), was adapted into the 1971 film Get Carter, directed by Mike Hodges and starring Michael Caine. The book was later retitled Get Carter. Lewis wrote several other crime novels, including Plender (1971), Jack Carter's Law (1974) and GBH (1980). He also contributed scripts to television series such as Z Cars.
Lewis died on 27 March 1982 in Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, aged 42.
