Biography
Theo Angelopoulos was a Greek film director and screenwriter. Born in Athens on 27 April 1935, he studied law at the University of Athens and later trained at the Institut des hautes études cinématographiques (IDHEC) in Paris.
He made his feature debut in 1970 and rose to prominence with historical and political films including The Travelling Players (1975). Later works such as Voyage to Cythera (1984), Landscape in the Mist (1988) and Eternity and a Day (1998), the last of which won the Palme d'Or at Cannes, established his international reputation.
Angelopoulos died on 24 January 2012 in Piraeus following a road accident.
