Biography
Tim McCanlies (born 1953) is an American screenwriter and film director. A fifth-generation Texan, he attended high school in Bryan, Texas, and took college courses at Texas A&M University. He later studied Radio-Television-Film at the University of Texas in Austin, transferred back to Texas A&M, and moved to Dallas in 1975, where he worked as a police officer while taking graduate film classes at Southern Methodist University.
McCanlies worked for Walt Disney Studios in the 1980s and wrote for major studios as a script doctor. He made his directorial debut with Dancer, Texas Pop. 81 (1998). He wrote the screenplay for The Iron Giant (1999), for which he received an Annie Award and a BAFTA Award. He wrote and directed Secondhand Lions (2003), and directed Alabama Moon (2009) and Angels Sing (2013). He also contributed the concept for the television series Smallville.
