Biography
Timothy Yip Gam-Tim, also credited as Tim Yip or Yip Kam-Tim, is a Hong Kong production designer, art director and costume designer for film, theatre and opera. He graduated from Hong Kong Polytechnic with a degree in photography and began working in film in 1986 as executive art director on John Woo’s A Better Tomorrow.
He is best known for his work on Ang Lee’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000), for which he served as both production designer and costume designer. The film brought him an Academy Award for Best Art Direction and a BAFTA Award for Best Costume Design. His other notable film credits include production design on Once Upon a Time in China III (1993), The Promise (2005), The Wayward Cloud (2005), Tai Chi Zero (2012) and Creation of the Gods I: Kingdom of Storms (2023), as well as costume design on Red Cliff (2008).
Yip has collaborated with directors including John Woo, Ang Lee, Chen Kaige, Feng Xiaogang and Tsai Ming-liang. He has also designed for opera productions such as Lohengrin at the Metropolitan Opera and Dream of the Red Chamber at San Francisco Opera, and works across visual art, photography and stage design.
