Fi1m perspective

Tom Blyth makes watchfulness interesting. His young Coriolanus Snow is likeable without becoming trustworthy, and we rate the patient listening that lets us see how much he wants from the person opposite.

Watch Tom Blyth listen in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (2023): his face registers an interest that never quite looks innocent. As Coriolanus Snow, a Capitol student hiding his family's poverty, he has reasons to attend closely to anyone who might help him. We found ourselves warming to him despite our reservations, because Blyth makes Snow's attention feel flattering before it feels calculating. The small changes in his face are enough to keep us looking for the catch. It is a persuasive performance in a film we can only recommend with substantial reservations.

His first feature lead was Scott and Sid (2018), followed by a supporting part as Glen Byam Shaw in Terence Davies's Benediction (2021). The title role in the television series Billy the Kid (2022–2025) brought the physical demands of riding and shooting. With Snow, the task was to make a morally compromised young man worth following through a franchise prequel. These are different acting jobs, but the evidence we find most persuasive is still the apparently modest business of paying attention.

Francis Lawrence gives him a useful partner in Rachel Zegler's District 12 tribute, whom Snow is assigned to mentor. Her unguarded singing makes his careful attention more noticeable; it also gives the attraction between them something we can believe. We need to believe he might care for her without forgetting what success would do for him. Blyth manages that without making every look an advance warning. The film's final forty minutes are much less convincing, however, and a strong central performance cannot repair its faltering structure.

His subsequent work includes Plainclothes (2025) and People We Meet on Vacation (2026), so Snow need not determine the parts that follow. We would like to see that attentive face with less to conceal. The risk is that a gift for playing calculation becomes an instruction to play it in everything. Directors hiring him for the next charming young man with something to hide should first consider letting him be straightforward.
