Biography
Tonio Selwart (also credited as Tony Selwart) was a German actor who worked in theatre and film. Born in Wartenberg, Bavaria, he trained as an actor after initially studying medicine and appeared in stage productions across Europe before emigrating to the United States in the early 1930s.
He achieved early success on Broadway in the Theatre Guild production of The Pursuit of Happiness (1933–1934). Selwart made his film debut in Hangmen Also Die! (1943) and appeared in numerous supporting roles, often as military officers, in American, Italian and French productions. His credits include Edge of Darkness (1943), The Cross of Lorraine (1943), Wilson (1944), The Barefoot Contessa (1954), Helen of Troy (1956), Anzio (1968) and Senso (1954) as Il Colonello Kleist. His final screen role was in Orson Welles's The Other Side of the Wind (2018).
He was also active in American television and on stage into the 1960s, with later appearances including Romanoff and Juliet (1961).
