Biography
Tony Lawrence is a Kittitian-American singer, actor and festival organiser. Born in St Kitts, he moved to the United States as a child, later settling in New York City after studying music and training at the American Theatre Wing.
In the late 1960s he organised and hosted the annual Harlem Cultural Festival under the city's Parks Department. He directed the 1969 edition, held in Mount Morris Park, which was filmed by Hal Tulchin and forms the basis of the 2021 documentary Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised), in which Lawrence appears in archive footage credited as Self - Harlem Cultural Festival Producer & Host.
Earlier in his career Lawrence released several singles, performed in nightclubs and on television, and had minor acting roles in films including Dr. No (1962). His activities after the 1980s are unconfirmed.
