Fi1m perspective

Tony Randel brings pace to Hellbound: Hellraiser II, but too little clarity or suspense. Its occasional eerie passages suggest that this editor and director might have done better by leaving more time between the horrors.

Another gruesome display arrives before the last has had time to become frightening. In Hellbound: Hellraiser II (1988), Tony Randel finds plenty of ways to damage a body and too few reasons for us to care about it. His directorial debut, edited with Richard Marden, is a poor sequel whose speed does little to disguise its confused storytelling. We grew tired of the gore because each new spectacle interrupted the little tension the film had managed to build.

Randel came to directing through editing and post-production at New World Pictures. His work on the American version of Godzilla 1985 (1985) involved re-editing and additional scenes, while Hellraiser (1987) used him as a production supervisor and uncredited editor. That practical background helps explain the emphasis on keeping the sequel moving, even when its explanations fail to make the danger clear.

Randel describes rehearsing a scene like a play before deciding where to put the camera, a sensible way to keep the actors ahead of the shot list. In Hellbound, though, the appetite for another grotesque set piece repeatedly takes priority over suspense. Michael Buchanan’s elaborate sets give us something to look at, Christopher Young’s score sustains the atmosphere, and Clare Higgins helps hold our attention. There are eerie passages in which Randel allows something quieter to work. They make the surrounding rush towards extravagant action and further explanations of the Cenobites harder to forgive.

The directing continued with Children of the Night (1991), Ticks (1993) and the action adaptation Fist of the North Star (1995). From the 2000s onwards, his work shifted primarily back towards editing, including films for Jim Wynorski and family-oriented projects. That later work deserves to be considered separately from the shortcomings of his debut; one confused horror sequel cannot establish the worth of an editor’s whole career. Approach Hellbound cautiously if elaborate sets and bodily mutilation are not enough to occupy an evening.
