Tony Schumacher writes police drama from the inside, with ten years on the Merseyside night shift behind him, and The Responder is the result: grim, exact, five nights that never let one man breathe. One series is a small sample. It is a remarkable one.

Chris Carson sits in the patrol car between jobs with the engine off, trying to slow his breathing, and the radio goes before he manages it. Nothing happens in the scene. We stopped breathing anyway, and we did not start again until the episode ended. Tony Schumacher spent around ten years as a Merseyside Police response officer, the ones who turn up first to whatever the radio says, and The Responder (2022) is built on what he learned there: the job is the seconds before the call, not the call.
He came to television late and by an odd road. After the police he drove taxis in Liverpool, then wrote on a commission from a local editor, then published three alternate-history novels beginning with The Darkest Hour (2014). The BBC Writersroom Northern Voices scheme took him in 2018, ScreenSkills the year after, and Jimmy McGovern mentored him through both. An episode of Clink followed, and then The Responder on BBC One. That is a thin filmography, and we will not pretend otherwise. It is also one of the best British police dramas we have seen in a long while.
What he does not do is most of what the genre does. There is no whiteboard, no maverick detective, no case that makes sense of the week. The stolen-drugs plot is the least interesting thing in the series and Schumacher seems to know it; it is there to keep Chris moving from one bad kitchen to the next, and it does. What he does instead is people. Chris is neither hero nor villain, the addicts and dealers he meets are not scenery, and Martin Freeman plays him with a control that lets the cracks show one at a time. The dialogue sounds like Liverpool at three in the morning, and the jokes are what make the misery bearable.
The caveat is the sample. One series, however good, is a single piece of evidence, and Schumacher has said himself that the industry expects working-class writers from the North to deliver gritty, place-specific stories and little else. His second series, The Cage (2026), is set among Liverpool's casinos with Sheridan Smith in the lead. We have not reviewed it and will not judge it here. He has said The Responder was hard to write because it meant going back over his own head, and that he wanted the next one to be more cheerful. We hope he did not entirely succeed.

Tony Schumacher is an English screenwriter and novelist, also credited as Anthony Schumacher. Born on 16 May 1967 in Huyton, Merseyside, he previously worked as a police officer with Merseyside Police and later as a taxi driver in Liverpool.
He created and wrote the BBC One series The Responder (2022), which draws on his experiences as a first responder. Schumacher took part in the BBC Writersroom Northern Voices Scheme in 2018 and the ScreenSkills New Writers Programme in 2019, where he was mentored by Jimmy McGovern. He also wrote for the series Clink.
His later work includes the BBC One drama The Cage, which premiered in 2026.
