Tyler James Williams has been acting since he was a child, and the trade shows in what he leaves out. As Gregory Eddie in Abbott Elementary he makes indecision watchable, which is harder than it sounds; his directing is newer and still being tested.

Watch Gregory Eddie in a corridor of Abbott Elementary when Janine Teagues says something hopeful. Williams does almost nothing. The mouth tightens, the eyes go to the floor and back, and we can see a man working out whether the sentence forming in his head is worth the trouble of saying. Most sitcom actors play the joke; Williams plays the half second before it, and the joke is often that he decides against. It is the show's best face, and it belongs to a performer who has been in front of cameras since he was four.
That is the career in one clause. He started on Sesame Street and other children's programmes, then carried Everybody Hates Chris (2005) as the title character for four seasons, which is a good deal of weight for a boy that age. Then came the usual adult apprenticeship: Lionel Higgins in Dear White People (2014), a run on The Walking Dead, a supporting part as Leon in Kathryn Bigelow's Detroit (2017), and a quieter stretch after that. He tends to be cast as the calm one, the serious man in a room of louder people, and Abbott Elementary (2021) gave that habit a part built around it.
Quinta Brunson wrote Gregory as a substitute who wanted the principal's job and did not get it, and the disappointment sits under everything he does. We were more touched than we expected to be by his early scenes with Janine, not because anything happens in them but because Williams lets us see Gregory notice that he likes her and file the information away for later. It is a romantic lead played entirely in reservations. He has called the character "a very relatable heartthrob", and the relatable half is right; the heartthrob half is the joke he is in on. Our complaint is with the show rather than with him. The writers know what he can do with a pause and lean on it, and the scenes between the two of them take more time than the situation can bear.
Directing came in the fourth season (2025), starting with "Science Fair", an episode with a lot of children in a lot of rooms. If anyone should know how to move children through rooms it is a man who was standing on marks at four, and by his own account the odd part was directing himself: "It's definitely weird. It's not my preference." We have not seen enough of his work behind the camera to say more than that. Randall Einhorn, who directs and produces the show, is the obvious model, and the open question is whether Williams has a manner of his own or the show's manner learned well.

Biography
Tyler James Williams is an American actor, rapper and director. He began his career as a child actor and rose to prominence playing the title character in the UPN/CW sitcom Everybody Hates Chris (2005–2009).
Williams has appeared in the AMC series The Walking Dead (2014–2015) as Noah, the Disney Channel film Let It Shine (2012) as Cyrus DeBarge, and films including Detroit (2017) and The United States vs. Billie Holiday (2021). Since 2021 he has played Gregory Eddie in the ABC sitcom Abbott Elementary, also directing episodes of the series.
He was born on 9 October 1992 in Westchester County, New York.
