Biography
Ugo Chiti is an Italian screenwriter, playwright, stage director and film director. Born on 13 February 1943 in Tavarnelle Val di Pesa, Tuscany, he began his career in theatre in 1970 with Pier'Alli's Society for Theatre Research. He later founded the company Teatro in piazza, specialising in folk and dialect theatre, and collaborated with companies in Florence.
Chiti entered cinema as a costume and production designer before becoming a screenwriter with Willy Signori e vengo da lontano (1989) for Francesco Nuti. He collaborated frequently with Nuti, Alessandro Benvenuti and Giovanni Veronesi, and from 2003 has been a regular collaborator of Matteo Garrone. His screenwriting credits include Gomorrah (2008), Tale of Tales (2015), Dogman (2018) and The Life Ahead (2020). He has also directed films such as Albergo Roma (1996).
Chiti has received six David di Donatello awards for best screenplay, two Silver Ribbons, a Globo d'oro and a European Film Award for Best Screenwriter.
