Biography
Ustad Vilayat Khan (1928–2004) was an Indian classical sitar player and composer. Born in Gouripur, East Bengal (now Bangladesh), he belonged to the sixth generation of musicians in the Imdadkhani gharana and developed the gayaki ang style of sitar playing that emulates vocal music.
He composed the score for Satyajit Ray's The Music Room (1958), for which he received a silver medal at the first Moscow International Film Festival in 1959. He also composed music for The Guru (1969) and Kadambari (1976). Khan performed internationally from the 1950s and received titles including Aftab-e-Sitar and Bharat Sitar Samrat.
