Biography
Victor Herbert was an Irish-born American composer of operettas and light music. Born in Dublin in 1859, he trained as a cellist in Germany before moving to the United States in 1886, where he performed with the Metropolitan Opera orchestra and later conducted the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.
He composed more than forty operettas, achieving success with works such as Babes in Toyland (1903) and Naughty Marietta (1910). The latter provided the score for the 1935 film of the same name. Herbert also contributed to the Ziegfeld Follies and was a founder of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.
He died in New York in 1924.
