Virginie Ledoyen brings feeling to thinly written romance, though she cannot supply the missing character. We value her warmth and ease with other actors; her international breakthrough, The Beach, gives only a restricted view of her abilities.

In Danny Boyle's The Beach (2000), Virginie Ledoyen gives Françoise's attraction to Richard a warmth the writing has done little to earn. Opposite Leonardo DiCaprio, she makes the romance worth attending to, even as the film keeps Françoise dependent on his character's story. We warmed to her because she brought feeling to an attraction that did so little to explain either person. That is a modest achievement in a disappointing film, and an awkward basis on which to become widely known.
She had already established herself in French cinema through Olivier Assayas's L'Eau froide (1994) and the leading role of Valérie Sergent in La Fille seule (1995). Those early dramas matter because they gave her a reputation for a natural screen presence before international attention arrived. After The Beach brought that attention, she declined most Hollywood offers and continued working in Europe. The subsequent work includes the ensemble 8 Women (2002) and Benoît Jacquot's French-court drama Les Adieux à la reine (2012), in which she plays Gabrielle de Polignac.
The distinction worth making is between an actor who works well with others and a character who exists chiefly for someone else. Ledoyen's ease in an ensemble, evident in 8 Women, is a strength; the lack of independence given to Françoise is a weakness in the writing. In The Beach, DiCaprio makes Richard's appetite for experience understandable, and Ledoyen supplies welcome tenderness alongside it. Yet their attraction leaves both people insufficiently clear. We can appreciate the performances without recommending the film on their account.
There is a recurring risk in casting her for apparent innocence with something more complicated underneath: the film can rely on that suggestion instead of giving her a character to play. The Beach leaves her doing too much of that work. For a fuller introduction, we would start with the lead performance in La Fille seule.

Virginie Ledoyen, born Virginie Fernández, is a French actress. She was born on 15 November 1976 in Paris and raised in Aubervilliers. She began modelling at the age of two and made her film debut at ten in Exploits of a Young Don Juan (1986). She received César Award nominations for most promising actress for Les Marmottes (1993), L'Eau froide (1994) and La Fille seule (1995).
Her international profile rose after she became a spokesmodel for L'Oréal in 2000, which led to her casting as Françoise opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in The Beach (2000). She is also known for roles in 8 Women (2002) and other French films and television productions. She has worked in French, English and American cinema since 1986.
