Biography
Vladimir Grigorievich Barsky (also credited as Vladimir Barskiy) was a Russian and Soviet film director, screenwriter and actor. Born in Moscow in 1866, he trained at the Moscow Real School and the Imperial Moscow Technical School before beginning a career in theatre in 1892. He worked as a director and actor in theatres in Ivanovo-Voznesensk from 1899 to 1917 and at the People's House in Tiflis from 1917 to 1921.
From 1921 he held senior roles at Goskinprom of Georgia and later at studios including Sovkino, Mezhrabpomfilm, Uzbekkino and Turkmenfilm, contributing to the development of Georgian, Turkmen and Uzbek cinema. He collaborated on a series of films about Georgia's revolutionary past, of which two were completed: Nightmares of the Past (1925) and At the Cost of Thousands (1925). He is also known for his acting role as Commander Golikov in Sergei Eisenstein's Battleship Potemkin (1925). Barsky died in Moscow in 1936.
