Biography
W.D. Richter is an American screenwriter, film director and producer, also credited as Walter Duch Richter. Born on 7 December 1945 in New Britain, Connecticut, he graduated from Dartmouth College and attended USC Film School before beginning screenwriting work in Hollywood in the 1970s.
His early credits include the comedies Slither (1973) and Nickelodeon (1976). He wrote the screenplay for Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) and later co-wrote Big Trouble in Little China (1986). Richter directed The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension (1984), having formed the production company Canton/Richter with Neil Canton. His screenplay for Brubaker (1980) was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. Other writing credits include Dracula (1979), Needful Things (1993), Home for the Holidays (1995) and Stealth (2005).
