Biography
Walter M. Jefferies, also known as Matt Jefferies, was an American art director and production designer. He served as production designer on the pilot for the original Star Trek television series and as art director for its three-season run from 1966 to 1969. His designs included the exterior and interiors of the USS Enterprise, sets such as the bridge and sick bay, props including phasers, the Klingon D-7 battlecruiser and logo.
Jefferies was born in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, and worked as a set designer at Warner Bros. before joining Desilu/Paramount. He received an Emmy nomination for outstanding achievement in art direction and scenic design for the Star Trek episode 'All Our Yesterdays'. Other credits include art direction on Little House on the Prairie (1974), Mission: Impossible and Father Murphy.
Jefferies died in Los Angeles in 2003. The maintenance conduits on Star Trek starships are named 'Jefferies tubes' in his honour.
