Biography

Wendy Richard (born Wendy Emerton) was an English actress. She trained at the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts and made early television appearances in series including Dad's Army (1968) and On the Buses (1971), as well as films such as Carry On Matron (1972) and Carry On Girls (1973).

She is best known for portraying Miss Shirley Brahms in the BBC sitcom Are You Being Served? (1972–1985) and its sequel series Grace & Favour (1992–1993), and as Pauline Fowler in the BBC soap opera EastEnders (1985–2006). Richard was appointed MBE in 2000 and received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2007 British Soap Awards. She died in 2009.
