Biography
William Gaunt (born William Charles Anthony Gaunt) is an English actor. He was born on 3 April 1937 in Pudsey, West Riding of Yorkshire. He attended Giggleswick School and Baylor University in Texas before training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. His early career included repertory theatre in Worthing, Bath, Salisbury and Cheltenham, followed by a period in America and work as a director.
Gaunt gained recognition for television roles including Richard Barrett in The Champions (1968–1969), Arthur Crabtree in No Place Like Home (1983–1987) and Andrew Prentice in Next of Kin (1995–1997). He appeared in Doctor Who (as Orcini) and made guest appearances in series such as Midsomer Murders and Casualty. On stage he has worked extensively with the Royal Shakespeare Company, including as the Earl of Gloucester opposite Ian McKellen in King Lear (2007–2008); he reprised the role in the 2008 television film of the production.
