Biography
Yasutaka Tsutsui is a Japanese novelist, science fiction author and actor. Born in Osaka on 24 September 1934, he graduated from Doshisha University and is known for works including the novel Paprika (1993) and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (1967).
His novel Paprika was adapted into a 2006 animated film directed by Satoshi Kon, in which Tsutsui voiced the character Kuga. Other adaptations of his work include the films The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (2006) and Time Traveller: The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (2010), and the series The Millionaire Detective – Balance: UNLIMITED (2020).
Tsutsui has received several literary awards, including the Izumi Kyoka award in 1981, the Tanizaki Prize in 1987 for Yumenokizaka bunkiten, the Kawabata Yasunari award in 1989, and the Nihon SF Taisho Award in 1992.
