Biography

Yoshiaki Hanayagi was a Japanese actor. Born Aoyama Masaru in 1924, he was adopted at a young age by the actor Hanayagi Shotaro. He made his stage debut in November 1933 at the Meijiza Theatre.

Hanayagi appeared in Kenji Mizoguchi films, playing Tamijirô Onoue in The Story of the Last Chrysanthemum (1939) and Zushiô in Sansho the Bailiff (1954). He later mentored younger actors in the Seinen no Kai group and died in 1978 after collapsing on stage during a performance at the Shinbashi Enbujo Theatre.
