Biography
Yoshiko Tsubouchi (also credited as 坪内美詠子 or Mieko Tsubouchi) was a Japanese actress. Born in Tokyo on 22 June 1915, she was scouted from a Ginza café and joined the Shochiku Kamata studio in 1932. She made her film debut the following year and became a leading actress in pre-war productions.
She appeared in early films by Yasujirō Ozu, including A Story of Floating Weeds (1934) as Otoki and The Only Son (1936) as Sugiko. After the war she worked freelance, often in supporting roles, and changed her professional name around 1955. She continued in film and television until the late 1960s, with a notable recurring part as a bar owner in the NHK series Jiken kisha.
Tsubouchi died on 3 November 1985.
