Biography
Affonso Beato is a Brazilian cinematographer. Born Affonso Henrique Beato on 13 July 1941 in Rio de Janeiro, he began his career in the 1960s and gained international recognition for his work on Glauber Rocha's Antonio das Mortes (1969). He has worked extensively in both Brazilian and international cinema, including collaborations with directors such as Pedro Almodóvar and Stephen Frears.
His credits include All About My Mother (1999), Ghost World (2001), Dark Water (2005), The Queen (2006), Love in the Time of Cholera (2007) and Nights in Rodanthe (2008). He has also served as president of the Brazilian Society of Cinematographers and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the organisation in 2013. In 2017 he became a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
