Biography
Alexis Smith was a Canadian-born American actress. Born Margaret Alexis Fitzsimmons Smith on 8 June 1921 in Penticton, British Columbia, she moved to Los Angeles as a child and trained at Los Angeles City College. She began her career in the early 1940s under contract to Warner Bros., appearing in films including Gentleman Jim (1942), Conflict (1945) and The Two Mrs. Carrolls (1947).
Smith later worked extensively in television, with recurring roles in Dallas (1978) and a guest appearance in Cheers (1982) that earned an Emmy nomination. Her final screen role was as Louisa van der Luyden in The Age of Innocence (1993). On stage she made a notable return to Broadway in the 1970s, winning the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for Follies (1972). She was married to actor Craig Stevens from 1944 until her death on 9 June 1993 in Los Angeles.
