Biography

Ali Hubert (born Alexander Hubert) was an Austrian costume designer who worked in German silent cinema and Hollywood. Born on 1 December 1878 in Vienna, he began as a landscape painter before turning to costume design for the stage and film around the end of the First World War.

He collaborated regularly with director Ernst Lubitsch on early German productions and later followed him to the United States. His credits include costume design for The Patriot (1928), The Merry Widow (1934) and The Life of Emile Zola (1937). He also worked as a technical advisor on several later films.

Hubert died on 1 June 1940 in Hollywood, California.
