Biography
Amma Asante is a British filmmaker, screenwriter and former actress. Born on 13 September 1969 in Lambeth, London, to Ghanaian parents, she trained at the Barbara Speake Stage School and began her career as a child actress in the BBC series Grange Hill.
She wrote and produced the 1998 BBC Two series Brothers and Sisters. Her feature directorial debut was A Way of Life (2004). She is known for directing the films Belle (2013), A United Kingdom (2016) and Where Hands Touch (2018), and episodes of the series The Handmaid's Tale (2019) and Mrs. America (2020). Asante was appointed MBE in 2017 and has been chancellor of Norwich University of the Arts since 2019.
