Biography
Andrew Laszlo was a Hungarian-American cinematographer. Born László András in Pápa, Hungary, he trained as a camera apprentice in Budapest before the Second World War. He survived internment in a Nazi concentration camp, immigrated to the United States in 1947 and later served as a combat photographer with the US Army Signal Corps during the Korean War.
Laszlo began working in American television in the mid-1950s and shot his first theatrical feature in 1964. He became a member of the American Society of Cinematographers in 1965. His credits include The Warriors (1979), Southern Comfort (1981) and Streets of Fire (1984), all directed by Walter Hill; First Blood (1982); Innerspace (1987); and Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989). He also worked on the miniseries Shōgun (1980).
Laszlo received two Primetime Emmy nominations for cinematography, for The Man Without a Country (1973) and Shōgun. He retired from active cinematography after Newsies (1992) and later wrote books on his career and the craft.
