Biography

Anil Kapoor is an Indian actor and producer who works primarily in Hindi-language films, as well as Indian television and international productions. Born on 24 December 1956 in Mumbai, he is part of the Kapoor show-business family; his father Surinder Kapoor was a film producer and his brothers Boney and Sanjay are also in the industry. He studied at St Xavier’s College, Mumbai, and trained at an acting school after an unsuccessful attempt to enter the Film and Television Institute of India.

Kapoor made his film debut in the late 1970s and became a leading actor in Bollywood during the 1980s and 1990s. He is known for roles in films including Mr India (1987), Tezaab (1988) and Beta (1992). His international breakthrough came with the role of game-show host Prem Kumar in Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire (2008), for which he shared a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. He has also appeared in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011) and the television series 24 (2010).
