Biography
Anna Lee (born Joan Boniface Winnifrith) was a British-American actress. She trained at the Central School of Speech Training and Dramatic Art at the Royal Albert Hall and began her career in British films in the early 1930s.
She appeared in several John Ford films, including How Green Was My Valley (1941) and Fort Apache (1948). Other notable roles include Mrs Bates in What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962) and Sister Margaretta in The Sound of Music (1965). From 1978 she played Lila Quartermaine in the soap opera General Hospital.
Lee was appointed MBE in 1982 for services to drama. She died in Beverly Hills, California, in 2004.
