Biography
Anthea Sylbert (née Giannakouros) was an American costume designer and film producer. Born in New York City on 6 October 1939, she studied art history at Barnard College and fashion at the Parsons School of Design. She began her career designing for off-Broadway productions before entering film in 1967 with The Tiger Makes Out.
Sylbert received Academy Award nominations for her work on Chinatown (1974) and Julia (1977). Her other notable credits as costume designer include Rosemary's Baby (1968), Carnal Knowledge (1971), The Cowboys (1972), Shampoo (1975), King Kong (1976) and The Last Tycoon (1976). She collaborated frequently with directors Roman Polanski and Mike Nichols.
In the late 1970s she moved into studio executive roles at Warner Bros. and United Artists, before producing films including several with Goldie Hawn. She received a Career Achievement Award from the Costume Designers Guild in 2005. Sylbert died on 18 June 2024 in Skiathos, Greece.
