Biography
Art Smith, also credited as Arthur Gordon Smith, was an American stage, film and television actor. Born in Chicago, he was a member of the Group Theatre and appeared in many of its productions, including several plays by Clifford Odets.
In films he usually played supporting roles, such as John in Letter from an Unknown Woman (1948) and Mel Lippman in In a Lonely Place (1950). He also appeared in Body and Soul (1947), Ride the Pink Horse (1947) and other 1940s productions. Smith was blacklisted in the early 1950s; his film work thereafter was limited, though he had an uncredited role in The Hustler (1961). In 1957 he originated the role of Doc in the Broadway production of West Side Story. He worked occasionally in television before retiring and died in 1973.
