Biography
Arthur E. Arling (also credited as Arthur Arling or Art Arling) was an American cinematographer. He began his career as a camera operator on films including Cavalcade (1933) and Gone with the Wind (1939), and served as a Lieutenant Commander in the US Navy during the Second World War.
Arling worked as director of photography on The Yearling (1946), for which he shared an Academy Award for Best Cinematography (Colour) with Charles Rosher and Leonard Smith. He received a further Oscar nomination for I'll Cry Tomorrow (1955). His other credits as director of photography include Love Me or Leave Me (1955), Pillow Talk (1959), Lover Come Back (1961), The Notorious Landlady (1962) and Strait-Jacket (1964). He was educated at the New York Institute of Photography and began his career at the Fox Film Corporation.
