Biography
Arthur Hopcraft (30 November 1932 – 22 November 2004) was a British screenwriter and journalist. He began his career in local newspapers before working as a sports journalist for the Daily Mirror, The Guardian and The Observer. His book The Football Man: People and Passions in Soccer was published in 1968.
In the 1970s Hopcraft moved into television writing. He created original plays including The Nearly Man (1974) and adapted literary works for the screen, notably John le Carré’s Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (1979) for the BBC, as well as Hard Times (1977), Bleak House (1985), A Perfect Spy (1987) and Rebecca (1997). He also wrote the screenplay for the film Agatha (1979).
Hopcraft received the BAFTA Writers Award in 1986.
