Biography
Austin Trevor (born Claude Austin Trevor Schilsky) was an Irish actor. He was born on 7 October 1897 in Belfast and died on 22 January 1978 in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk.
He began his career on the stage, appearing in the West End premiere of John Galsworthy's Escape in 1926 and transferring to Broadway the following year. He played Captain August Lutte in Noël Coward's Bitter Sweet from 1929 to 1931. Trevor was the first actor to portray Hercule Poirot on screen, in the films Alibi (1931), Black Coffee (1931) and Lord Edgware Dies (1934). He later appeared in a supporting role in The Alphabet Murders (1965).
His film credits include Goodbye, Mr. Chips (1939) as Ralston, The Red Shoes (1948) as Professor Palmer, Night Train to Munich (1940) as Captain Prada and Anna Karenina (1948) as Colonel Vronsky. He worked extensively in television during the 1960s, including as Lord Halifax in The First Churchills (1969). He was married to the actress Violet Clowes.
