Biography

Avery Brooks is an American actor, director, singer, narrator and educator. He was born on 2 October 1948 in Evansville, Indiana.

Brooks is best known for playing Captain Benjamin Sisko in the television series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993–1999) and Dr. Bob Sweeney in the film American History X (1998). He also appeared as Hawk in Spenser: For Hire and its spin-off A Man Called Hawk, and in the films The Big Hit (1998) and 15 Minutes (2001). He has directed episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and appeared in documentaries including The Captains (2011).

Brooks attended Oberlin College and Rutgers University, where he earned a BA and MFA. His career spans stage, television and film from the late 1970s.
